Harachauhans of Bundi-Kotah
Once the Chauhans of Delhi were defeated by Mohammed Ghori (1192) the clan
dispersed. Most of them sought sanctuary with Mewar and fought valiantly for
the defence of Chittor. But Rao Deva, belonging to a branch of this clan
launched out on his own. He defeated the Mina and Bhil tribals of the
Bundi-Kotah area on both sides of the
Chambal river and established an independent
kingdom. This state was known as Hadavati.
In 1625 two branches of this family separated accepting the river Chambal as a
natural boundary and the separate states of Bundi and Kotah came into being.
Both princes acknowledged the overlordship of Mewar and came to the aid of
Chittor. Thereafter they made separate treaties with Moghul power which
operated till the states came under the British. Bundi was known for its
school of miniature painting and both Bundi and Kotah are famous for the
weaving of gossamer-fine textiles.
Since independence the harnessing of the Chambal waters and the large scale
development of the Chambal Valley Project has led to Kotah becoming a growing
industrial centre.
